[edit] Word or phrase of Ugandan English

Special hire (compound noun) or special (noun); special hires or specials (plural)

[edit] Meaning or equivalent in standard English

Taxi; cab

[edit] Usage of the word or phrase

  • In Kampala, more people use specials at night than during the day.
  • We shall take a special hire if we have enough money.

[edit] Origin of the word or phrase

Unknown. It is possible, however, that the initial phrase was "special hire car" or "special hire taxi" as distinguished from "taxi" which, in Uganda, is used interchangeably with "minibus". Overtime, the "car" or "taxi" part of the phrase may have been dropped to leave "special hire", in the same way that "hire" is often dropped to leave "special".
